Not Thine

“O World, hast thou given life to me?
Hath thy designing lifted me
From lowly dust, breathed into me
A soul alike to that Divine?
Nay, thou hast not, nor canst.
Then my life is not thine.

“O World, hast thou given light to me?
Hath thy omniscience shed on me
Sure rays of wisdom, guide to be,
Through earth’s dark maze my way to find?
Nay, thou hast not, nor canst.
Then my light is not thine.

“O World, hast thou given love to me?
Hath thy compassions loosed from me
The leash of sin and death’s decree,
Made praise and peace and power mine?
Nay, thou hast not, nor canst.
Then my love is not thine.”
